Airport Runway Closures

DFW Airport is planning a series of west side north/south vertical runway closures from March 15 through June 20, 2017, to allow the FAA to install runway status lights. Coppell and surrounding cities could experience additional runway traffic including jet departures on Runway 31L as well as night operations on outboard runways as a result of the closures.

The following information outlines the specific runways and the dates they will be closed:

  • March 15 - March 28:  A partial closure of Runway 18L/36R (the north 2,000 feet will be closed; the runway will be usable for limited operations)
  • Each weekend from March 18 to June 4th, with the exception of March 25/26 and May 27/28: Weekend full closure of Runway 18L/36R
  • May 23 - June 1:  A full length closure of Runway 18R/36L
  • June 7 - June 20:  A partial closure of Runway 18L/36R (the south 2,100 feet will be closed; the runway will be usable for limited operations)

The Runway Status Lights (RWSL) system is an automatic advisory safety system designed to prevent and reduce runway accidents without interfering with airport operations. The in-pavement lighting system works similarly to traffic lights by providing a visual signal to pilots and vehicle operators when it is unsafe to enter, cross or begin takeoff from a runway. For more information on RWSL, please visit the FAA's website.

DFW Airport encourages citizens with inquiries or complaints to contact them via email at or on the Noise Complaint Hotline at 972-973-3192.
