City of Coppell Receives Positive Results from Independent Audit

On February 13, 2019, Weaver, the City of Coppell’s independent auditor, released its Independent Auditor’s Report, and the city is proud to announce that it has received an unmodified opinion, which indicates the city’s financial statements were fairly presented in all material respects for FY 2017-2018.

“We have issued what’s called an ‘unmodified opinion,’ which is the highest level of assurance that the financial statements are fairly presented in all material respects in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles,” said John DeBurro, a partner with Weaver.

Further, Weaver also issued an Independent Auditor’s Report on Internal Control over Financial Reporting and on Compliance and Other Matters. According to DeBurro, this report had no material findings, meaning that the audit was “clean.”

“We are extremely pleased with the findings of the audit,” said Jennifer Miller, Director of Finance. “As we rely on taxpayer funds, we strive to be responsible and as transparent as possible. The unmodified audit and the fact that we have received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for 29 straight years proves that we’re on the right track.”

According to Chapter 103 of the Texas Local Government Code, all municipal governments must conduct an independent audit on an annual basis. The audit was performed in accordance with Generally Accepted Auditing Standards and Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards.

The audit process in Coppell began in July 2018, and fieldwork was completed in January 2019. Weaver used a risk-based approach, meaning that the audit focused on potential areas of risk that could lead to material misstatements of the financial statements. The audit was tailored to specifically address areas of risk, including revenue recognition, capital projects and long-term liabilities.
