The Coppell Fire Department is proud to announce that it has been recertified as a 'Best Practices Department' by the Texas Fire Chiefs Association (TFCA). The Coppell Fire Department is the second department in the state to ever receive the Best Practices designation twice.
"We are extremely honored to receive the recertification. This prestigious designation truly illustrates that we provide high-quality services to our residents and businesses, and it validates all of our hard work," said Coppell Fire Chief Kevin Richardson. "We do much more than fight fires – from community outreach and education to providing life-saving medical services to conducting inspections and safety checks, the Coppell Fire Department strives to provide a high level of service that results in an improved quality of life for our residents. This recertification validates our efforts."
"I want to commend the City of Coppell for its history of excellence...[The Coppell Fire Department] sets the bar in the state of Texas, sets the bar in North Texas, sets the bar in the immediate area," said Chief Eric Thompson, Red Oak Fire Chief and North Region Director for the TFCA. "[Coppell has] a [Insurance Services Offices, or ISO] Class 1 Fire Department. There are only eight departments in the state of Texas, including [Coppell], that have been able to achieve a Class 1 and a Best Practices designation. That's amazing."
The TFCA Best Practices Recognition Program evaluates a Fire Department's compliance with 114 Best Business Practices for Fire Departments in the State of Texas. The Best Practices were developed by Fire Service professionals to assist agencies in the efficient and effective delivery of service to communities. These Best Practices cover all aspects of Fire Department management and services including but not limited to Administration and Organization, Emergency Medical Service, Fire Prevention, Risk Reduction, Community Outreach, Safety and Health and Professional Standards and Conduct.
This voluntary certification process required the Coppell Fire Department to conduct a critical self-review of its policies, procedures, facilities and operations. The Coppell Fire Department became the second department in the State of Texas to receive the Best Practices designation in 2014, and they began the lengthy recertification process in 2018. Throughout the process, the Coppell Fire Department prepared proofs of compliance for each of the Program's areas of concentration, completed an internal review, and conducted an outside audit and review. The final on-site reviews were conducted by trained Fire Chiefs and Assistant Fire Chiefs from other areas of the state. The results of these reviews were then sent to the Texas Fire Chiefs Best Practices Recognition Board for final analysis and decision to recertify the "Recognized" status.
The TFCA Best Practices program provides a pathway for a fire department to push its level of service to a level of excellence that is validated by independent experts. The designation demonstrates to Coppell residents and businesses that their fire department is among the very best in the Texas fire service.
