Oct. 31, 2017 — Coppell Independent School District — The School Resources Officers, or SROs, serving Coppell ISD schools recently were selected as "Agency of the Year" for the State of Texas by the Texas Association of School Resource Officers. In addition, Coppell Middle School East Officer Tonard Warmsley, known as "Officer Tee" — who also serves Austin, Mockingbird and Valley Ranch elementary schools — was named Texas "School Resource Officer of the Year" by the association.
"On a daily basis, our School Resource Officers go above and beyond in their work to keep our district community safe," Coppell ISD Superintendent Brad Hunt said. "They also are committed to being a part of our community and supporting our students, staff and parents in educating our children. The district is so proud of our SROs for this well-deserved recognition."
Officer Warmsley, who is in his second year as
a Coppell ISD SRO, was recognized as Officer of the Year for his commitment to
engaging with learners at CMS East and its feeder elementary schools. Known for
his smiling face and positive attitude by staff and students, “Officer Tee” is
a popular fixture at district events. He
credits his award to the support he receives from Coppell ISD staff and
teachers, particularly at CMS East.
"[CMS East] staff is my family, and they have taught me so much," Warmsley said. "For us, it's all about the kids, and I am so appreciative of what I get to do every day."
SROs serve as liaisons between the Coppell Police Department and district to provide security and foster a safe learning environment for all students.
"The Coppell Police Department and Coppell ISD enjoy a unique partnership that has been instrumental in achieving our shared success," said Coppell Police Sgt. Eric Debus, who is in charge of the district's SROs. "The group of SROs that I have the privilege of working with are amazing representatives of the true essence of what it means to be a complete school resource officer."
Sgt. Debus added, "The impact SROs have on the students they serve is possible because of the relationship we have with both the teachers and administrators with CISD. I'm truly grateful to be a part of this award-winning team."
SROs promote safety and wellness to students
through education by being highly visible at high school and middle school
campuses, and by serving as positive role models at elementary schools. They also
offer programs and presentations in the areas of drug and alcohol awareness,
bullying and cyber-bulling, and stranger danger.
"We are thrilled to partner with the school district and provide School Resource Officers who help keep the students and faculty safe while at school," said Coppell City Manager Mike Land. "Our SROs are known for going the extra mile and connecting with kids and staff in order to build trust between the police and the community. Congratulations to the SRO team and Officer Warmsley for being named School Resource Officer of the Year!"
