Summer Reading Challenge

Join the Cozby Library and Community Commons in their Summer Reading Challenge! From June 1st through July 31st, they encourage you to Imagine Your Story through reading, crafts, experiments, performers, programs, and more!

Starting June 1st, you can pick up a Summer Reading Bag from the library through curbside pickup. There's a bag for kids, teens, and adults! 

If you prefer to not come to the library, you will be able to print some of the materials and access the performers by going to coppelltx.gov/library/reading-challenges.

Bookmark Contest

June 1 – July 31  |   Cozby Library and Community Commons

Calling all aspiring artists and designers ages 5 - Adult! The Cozby Library and Community Commons is seeking creative bookmark designs for this year's Summer Reading Challenge! Entries must be received by July 31. The winning bookmarks will be professionally printed and distributed at the library. Submission form is available here: http://www.coppelltx.gov/Documents/Government/Library/Bookmark%20Contest.pdf

If you are unable to print the submission form, you may request one from staff when you pickup books at the curbside service. To sign-up for curbside service visit bit.ly/cozbycurbside.

Scan and email completed form to cozbyprograms@coppelltx.gov. You may also place the form in an envelope and return it through the drive-thru bookdrop. Email CozbyPrograms@coppelltx.gov with any questions.

Contest may be changed or canceled due to the library being closed and recommendations from the CDC and the City of Coppell.

Virtual Performer: Science Tellers

This summer, Cozby Library and Community Commons is bringing incredible performers right to your home! Go to www.coppelltx.gov/library/reading-challenges to watch the Science Tellers perform Dragons: Return of the Ice Sorceress.

In a faraway world, two brave villagers go on a daring journey to release the dragons and save the entire kingdom from the evil ice sorceress. See if the two heroes can stop the evil ice sorceress before all hope is lost!

Join them on an action-packed adventure as they soar high into the air and touch the clouds on the back of a dragon! This interactive story features amazing special effects that will bring this fantasy to life! Then journey behind the scenes of the special effects as we explore the science of matter.


Celebrate Coppell:  Red, White & Views Outdoor Decorating Contest

Our Independence Day celebration is taking on a new look! View the Red, White & Views Map to see the residents and businesses who have participated in the porch and window decorating contest, then take a walk or drive around to see the displays. Take pictures of the spaces you find and tag us on social to help share the joy! #coppellredwhiteandviews. The more people who take part, the more celebration there is to share, so get your friends and neighbors involved! Check Coppell Parks & Recreation's Instagram and Facebook pages to see which displays won Most Patriotic, Most Creative, and Citizens' Choice.


Virtual Performer: Science of Spin (Yo-yo)

Tune in to witness Val Oliver's incredible yo-yo tricks, and be sure to have your own yo-yo ready, too! You'll have the opportunity to improve your yo-yo skills as The Science of Spin breaks down the basics of yo-yoing and gets you started on your own tricks.


EcoExplorer Activity Kit Pick-Up

Nature Detectives Trail Day

The wild animals in Coppell Nature Park are rarely seen. So, how do we know they live here? Develop your tracking skills by examining and interpreting the indirect evidence animals leave behind. 

Trail Days are designed for families and youth ages 3-14. Drop-in during open hours to learn about a theme in nature by exploring various activity stations on the trails of Coppell Nature Park. Maps are provided and station locations allow social distancing. Please arrive with enough time to complete activities before the close time. This program is FREE of charge and required is not registration.


Relax with Yoga Nidra and Zentangle

July 1  |  10 am  |  Cozby Library and Community Commons Online

Join library staff and a guest instructor to learn two great techniques for relaxation. For maximum benefit we recommend that you attend all four classes; however, you are welcome to join for as few or as many sessions as you can. This program is for adults ages 18 and up. Space is limited and registration is required.

The program will be hosted in Zoom, a video conference software that is free for participants. Zoom meeting details will be sent to registrants the day before the program. The Zoom video conference is considered a virtual Library facility. Participants must adhere to the Library Facility Guidelines while attending.

Using a platform of tips, tricks, and inspiration from a number of writing books Cozby Library and Community Commons will offer small pieces of advice, optional writing prompts, exercises, and chances to share writing samples with others. Facilitated by Amanda Kennedy and Tara Henderson. For adults aged 18 and up. Registration is required. Coppell Farmers Market

Restock your pantry with fresh produce and support local at the Coppell Farmers Market every Saturday. The City of Coppell considers the CFM a viable grocery option during the current shelter in place orders issued by both Dallas County and the City of Coppell, and the CFM plans to continue to offer grocery services during the current COVID-19 public health emergency. Strict safety precautions will be implemented at the CFM during this time. Please read about these precautions before attending to be prepared. The market is located at 768 W. Virtual Art Lesson

July 7  |  7 pm  |  Cozby Library and Community Commons Online

Join library staff and guest instructor Maxine Carrick for a 3 week art intensive that will help you understand the world of art and how you can express your thoughts though art. All levels of ability are welcome to join! Participants are encouraged to attend all 6 classes (2 per week) if possible; however, you are welcome to attend as many or as few classes as you are able. You will have opportunities to engage with the instructor and other class members and complete practice exercises each week. Maxine is an experienced art instructor with a degree in Fine Art and History of Art. 

Please only register for ONE CLASS. The system will automatically register you for the remaining classes so that you will have a spot if you choose to attend. You do not need to sign up for each class individually. We encourage you to attend as many classes as you are able. Registration is required. For teens 16+ and adults. 


Basic Jr. Fire Academy 

July 8  |   9:30 – 11 am   |   Life Safety Park

This course is designed to teach 2nd-3rd graders about intermediate fire safety and fire operations. They'll get to be a junior firefighter for a day by going through LSP Fire Academy. Registration is required


Incredible Insects Trail Day

Discover the unique characteristics of insects and their important roles in the ecosystem. Encounter the different types of insects that live in Coppell Nature Park. Learn why insect populations are declining and how YOU can help.

CPR-AED

Event is Full: Accepting Wait List Registrations

CPR AED is an instructor-led course that teaches critical skills needed to respond to and manage an emergency situation until emergency medical services arrives. Skills covered in this course include first aid, choking relief, and what to do for sudden cardiac arrest in adults, children, and infants.


An Evening with Patriots Dinner Series with Major Anthony Smith

Meet Your Neighbor:  A Conversation on Racism

The Meet Your Neighbor Series continues virtually on July 11th. Join the Cozby Library and Community Commons on Zoom to hear from a panel of community members as they tell their personal stories of racism and the black experience in Coppell.

In order to build deeper understanding and empathy, audience members can ask questions of the panelists in a safe and comfortable environment. This is an opportunity for community members to share their experiences and learn from each other without debate or political discussion.

This series of programs was developed with the Community Builders which is comprised of Coppell Citizens. Topics for the programs are generated by the committee or suggestions from community members.

Summer Drive-In Movie Series:  Do Dooni Chaar

July 11  |  7:30 pm  |  Coppell Arts Center

Reinventing the classic moviegoing experience, the Coppell Arts Center and Coppell Parks and Recreation are excited to announce the launch of a Summer Movie Drive-In Series for the community. The Arts Center is turning its newly constructed parking lot on the west side of the Center into a drive-in theater for a safe, comfortable entertainment experience the whole family will enjoy.

Tickets are available online-only for $10 per vehicle. Pre-packaged popcorn and water are available for purchase online and on-site at the Drive-In to limit contact and maintain social distancing. Gates will open at 7:30 pm, and the feature will begin at 8:30 pm. Beep, Beep:  Jeeps!

Students in this class will learn about basic motor vehicle and pedestrian safety skills, such as understanding when and where it is safe to cross a street. Safety rules discussed for when students ride in motor vehicles will include responsible seat belt and booster seat use. After the classroom presentation, students will be given time to practice their learned skills around Safety Town. Children enrolled in this class should be in Kindergarten or 1st Grade ONLY. The cost is free, but registration is required


Got YA: Virtual Teen Book Club

Virtual Tea Time

Break out the fancy dishes, put on your best tea time attire, and brew your favorite cuppa! We will join Alex Hargis, managing director of the Coppell Arts Center, as he discusses the upcoming grand opening and the future of the arts in Coppell. Registration is required. Each participant will receive a personalized invite to this virtual program. Each individual must sign up with their full name and email address. Please do not use your email to register others who are not in your household because two different people on two different devices cannot join the meeting using the same invite. Crash Course: Basic First Aid

This course is designed to teach 6th-9th graders about basic first aid ailments and treatments, with hands-on exercises. After the classroom lesson, students will be given scenarios to test their learned knowledge around Safety Town! A great intro course for boy/girl scouts and babysitters. Registration is required.


Superhero Science Trail Day

What's your favorite superpower? Some wildlife display 'superpowers' that help them survive in their environment. Explore flight, strength, endurance, vision, invisibility, mimicry, protection and other amazing adaptations among the plant and animal world!

Virtual Lit Fix:  Shakespeare

July 27  |  7 pm  |  Cozby Library and Community Commons Online

Shakespeare was one of the greatest writers of all time, but maybe not for the reasons we think.  Most of his plays were written for two audiences- the uneducated masses and the educated elite.  Even his most serious plays have hidden jokes and wit scattered throughout.  We will examine several of his great works to uncover the many possible meanings of his stories and discuss whether Shakespeare would even recognize his own plays as they are performed today.  You do not need to have read the plays to participate just come with a curious mind.

This program is designed primarily for adults; however teens age 15 and up are also welcome to attend. Space is limited and registration is required.

Note: The program will be hosted in Zoom, a video conference software that is free for participants. Zoom meeting details will be sent to registrants the day before the program. The Zoom video conference is considered a virtual Library facility. Participants must adhere to the Library Facility Guidelines while attending. 


Yoga and a Hike

Start your week with relaxing outdoor yoga followed by an invigorating guided hike through Coppell Nature Park. Participants must bring their own mats. Registration is required and space limited. The fee is $5.


Beep, Beep:  Jeeps!

July 27  |  9:30 – 11 am  |  Life Safety Park

Students in this class will learn about basic motor vehicle and pedestrian safety skills, such as understanding when and where it is safe to cross a street. Safety rules discussed for when students ride in motor vehicles will include responsible seat belt and booster seat use. After the classroom presentation, students will be given time to practice their learned skills around Safety Town. Children enrolled in this class should be in Kindergarten or 1st Grade ONLY. The cost is free, but registration is required.


College Safety 101

Headed off to college? About to live on your own for the first time? Hear from local professionals on the latest home, fire, and personal safety tips for incoming college students and first time renters.

An officer from the University of North Texas Police Department will be co-hosting the event with us. This class is targeted towards graduating high school seniors and/or first time independent dwellers, but is appropriate for high school juniors and all college students. Registration is required and open online now via LSP website

Splish Splash Bash: Water & Heat Safety

July 29  |   9:30 – 11 am   |   Life Safety Park

This course is designed to teach K-5th graders about water & heat safety. Classroom topics will include pool safety practices, open water safety, and heat safety. After the classroom session, students will then get to head outside to Safety Town for a fun water activity! Registration is required.


Dino Discovery Trail Day

July 29  |  10 am – Noon  |  Biodiversity Education Center

Do you DIG dinosaurs? What did Coppell Nature Park look like 100 million years ago? Unearth the unique history behind the prehistoric organisms that roamed North Texas throughout the ancient past. You may be surprised by the fossil evidence found here! Learn about the various forms of wildlife and how they were influenced over time by the changing environment. 

Trail Days are designed for families and youth ages 3-14. Drop-in during open hours to learn about a theme in nature by exploring various activity stations on the trails of Coppell Nature Park. Maps are provided and station locations allow social distancing. Please arrive with enough time to complete activities before the close time. This program is FREE of charge and required is not registration.
