Thanksgiving Safety From Life Safety Park

​As the holidays approach, families will be gathering around the kitchen to prepare their favorite recipes, decorating cookies and cakes, and cooking the perfect turkey.  As a division of the Coppell Fire Department, Life Safety Park is reminding families to keep fire safety top of mind during this joyous, yet hectic time.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,760 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving – the peak day for such fires. Thanksgiving Day fires occur four times more than the average number of daily fires. Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and deaths. Keep your family and home safe this holiday season by remembering these tips:​

  • Do not leave food unattended while cooking. Stay in the kitchen and keep an eye on the food.
  • Check on food in the oven frequently, and do not leave the home.
  • Keep children at least three feet away from the stove.  
  • Keep flammable items such as oven mitts and towels away from the stove top.
  • Keep the floor clear of any tripping hazards, such as toys, purses, stools, and bags.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot liquids and foods. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy, or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep matches, lighters and knives out of the reach of children.
  • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working.
  • Be sure cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer, or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child, and that they do not pose a tripping hazard.
The National Fire Protection Association and the Coppell Fire Department strongly discourage the use of a turkey fryer. Turkey fryers, as currently designed, are not suitable for safe use by even a well-informed and careful consumer. The use of turkey fryers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries, and destruction of property. However, if a turkey fryer is used, please follow these safety guidelines:
  • ​Keep the outdoor fryer off decks and porches and away from houses, garages, trees and any other structures.
  • Use a thawed and dry turkey. The USDA recommends refrigerator thawing:  Allow approximately 24 hours for every five pounds of turkey. Partially frozen and/or wet turkeys can cause the oil to bubble furiously and spill over, which may cause the fryer to catch on fire.
  • Place fryer on a flat, level surface and carefully gauge the amount of oil needed.
  • Never leave a fryer unattended.
  • Monitor the temperature of the fryer. Keep track of the oil temperature as many fryers do not have their own thermostat.
  • Keep children away from the fryer. The lid and handle can become very hot and could cause burns.
  • Have a fire extinguisher ready at all times.
  • NEVERuse water to extinguish an oil/grease fire. Water will only cause the fire to spread quickly, and could result in significant fire damage, as well as devastating injury.
  • Follow all manufacturer's warnings and instructions.
